Walk into almost any pet store and you’ll find bags of dog food covered with words like premium, natural, wholesome, and high protein. But when we evaluate nutrition at Divine Pups, we look past the front of the bag and turn it around.

Learning how to choose healthy dog food begins with understanding what is actually in the food.

How to Choose Healthy Dog Food by Reading the First Five Ingredients

Ingredients on a pet food label are generally listed in descending order by weight before processing. That makes the beginning of the ingredient panel an important place to look—but it shouldn’t be the only thing you consider.

When learning how to choose healthy dog food, we like to see clearly identified, recognizable ingredients near the top of the list and a named animal protein prominently represented.

ā€œWhitefish,ā€ ā€œbeef,ā€ or ā€œturkey,ā€ for example, tells you considerably more than a vague animal-derived ingredient.

At Divine Pups, nutrition is part of the same intentional approach we take to breeding, raising, training, and developing our puppies. Ā Learn more about why families choose Divine PupsĀ

Why Whole-Food Ingredients Matter

When you’re figuring out how to choose healthy dog food, ask yourself a simple question:

Do I recognize what I am feeding my dog?

Whole-food ingredients provide identifiable sources of protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. We want the ingredient panel to tell us something meaningful about where a dog’s nutrition is coming from.

But there is another reason you need to read beyond the marketing on the front of the bag.

Watch for Ingredient Splitting

Ingredient splitting occurs when similar ingredients are listed separately—such as peas, pea protein, pea fiber, and pea starch. Individually, each may appear farther down the ingredient panel. Together, however, they may represent a much larger percentage of the formula.

This is one reason how to choose healthy dog food involves looking at the entire ingredient panel rather than simply checking whether ā€œmeatā€ appears first.

For a deeper explanation, read Dogs Naturally Magazine’s guide to ingredient splitting.Ā

What About Meat Meal?

This is one area where pet-food discussions can become confusing.

A named meat meal—such as chicken meal or fish meal—is meat that has been rendered to remove much of its water and fat and then ground into a concentrated ingredient. Because the moisture has been removed, meal can provide a concentrated source of animal protein.

So meal itself isn’t automatically a bad ingredient.

What matters when learning how to choose healthy dog food is specificity and quality. ā€œChicken mealā€ identifies its animal source. Vague animal ingredients give consumers much less information about what they are actually purchasing.

We also look at the formula as a whole. Is it built around quality animal protein? Are the other ingredients purposeful? Is the manufacturer transparent about sourcing and testing? Is the food nutritionally complete for the dog’s life stage?

Healthy Dog Food Is About More Than Marketing

A beautiful bag doesn’t make a beautiful ingredient panel.

Learning how to choose healthy dog food means becoming an educated consumer. Turn the bag over. Read the ingredients. Look for named animal proteins. Pay attention to ingredient splitting. Consider the manufacturer’s quality-control standards and ask questions about how the food is formulated and tested.

Because what goes into your dog’s bowl every day matters.

And at Divine Pups, we choose to feed PawTree because we believe good nutrition should be just as intentional as everything else we do.
