If you’re thinking about adding a second dog to your family, you’ve probably asked yourself one of the most common questions we hear at Divine Pups: Should I choose a male or female Shih Tzu companion? It’s an understandable question, and one that many families spend weeks researching before bringing home another puppy. The truth, however, may surprise you.

At Divine Pups, we don’t believe the best male or female Shih Tzu companion is determined by gender alone. While there are some general personality tendencies that people often associate with male and female dogs, those traits vary tremendously from one puppy to another. In our experience, the single most important factor in creating a successful multi-dog household isn’t whether your new puppy is a boy or a girl—it’s whether their temperament complements both your current dog and your family’s lifestyle.

Choosing a puppy based solely on gender is a little like choosing a lifelong friend based only on whether they’re male or female. Personality, confidence, energy level, resilience, and compatibility ultimately have a much greater impact on the relationship than gender ever will.

Let’s take a closer look at what really matters when choosing the right companion for your Shih Tzu.

Does Gender Really Matter?

When families begin researching a male or female Shih Tzu companion, they often find conflicting advice online. Some articles insist that males are more affectionate. Others claim females are easier to train. Still others recommend opposite-sex pairings because they supposedly get along better.

The reality is far more nuanced.

While hormones and genetics can influence certain behaviors, they do not determine a puppy’s entire personality. Every puppy is born with their own unique temperament that develops through genetics, early experiences, socialization, enrichment, and training. Two male puppies from the same litter can have completely different personalities. Likewise, two females may share very few behavioral similarities.

At Divine Pups, we’ve raised outgoing females, gentle males, highly driven females, easygoing males, and everything in between. These experiences have reinforced what we have long believed: temperament is a much stronger predictor of lifelong compatibility than gender alone.

Understanding Common Male and Female Tendencies

Although every puppy is an individual, there are some general tendencies that owners occasionally observe.

Male Shih Tzus are often described as easygoing, playful, people-oriented, and eager to remain close to their families. Many mature into affectionate companions who enjoy cuddling, participating in family activities, and making new friends.

Female Shih Tzus are frequently described as confident, observant, and independent thinkers. They often develop strong bonds with their families while maintaining a greater sense of autonomy as they mature.

These characteristics, however, should always be viewed as broad tendencies rather than guarantees.

We’ve met incredibly independent males and exceptionally affectionate females. We’ve seen calm boys and energetic girls, quiet females and outgoing males. Personality simply cannot be predicted by gender alone.

That is why choosing a male or female Shih Tzu companion based only on stereotypes often leads families to overlook the puppy that may actually be the perfect fit.

The Best Match Starts with Your Current Dog

Rather than asking whether you need a male or female puppy, we encourage families to ask a different question:

What type of personality would complement my current dog?

If your Shih Tzu is naturally calm and gentle, they may appreciate a puppy with a similar temperament rather than one with endless energy.

If your dog is playful, adventurous, and constantly looking for interaction, they may thrive with a puppy who shares that enthusiasm.

Likewise, if your current dog is shy or cautious, adding an overly confident puppy could either help build confidence or create unnecessary stress, depending on the individual personalities involved.

This is why thoughtful temperament matching is so important.

At Divine Pups, we spend weeks getting to know every puppy before making placement recommendations. We observe confidence levels, curiosity, recovery from new experiences, motivation, adaptability, human engagement, and overall temperament. Those observations allow us to recommend puppies based on compatibility, not simply coat color or gender.

Same-Sex vs. Opposite-Sex Pairings

Another common question we receive is whether opposite-sex pairings are always the better choice.

The answer is no.

Healthy same-sex pairings can be every bit as successful as opposite-sex pairings when both dogs are well matched and appropriately managed. Likewise, opposite-sex pairings are not automatically harmonious simply because one dog is male and the other is female. Much depends on each dog’s individual personality, age, maturity, socialization history, and the leadership provided within the home.

For families with pets that are or will be spayed or neutered, gender often becomes an even smaller piece of the overall compatibility puzzle. Again, this is where temperament takes center stage.

Why Temperament Matching Matters Most

One of the core philosophies at Divine Pups is that beautiful puppies deserve thoughtfully matched homes.

Every puppy develops their own personality long before they leave for their new family. Through purposeful enrichment, age-appropriate challenges, confidence-building experiences, and careful observation, we begin identifying each puppy’s strengths and natural tendencies.

Some puppies eagerly investigate every new object they encounter, while others prefer to observe before jumping in. Some naturally seek human interaction, while others display greater independence. None of these qualities are inherently better than another. The goal is to understand who each puppy is becoming and thoughtfully pair them with the family—and existing dog—that will allow them to flourish.

While genetics certainly influence personality, early experiences are equally important in shaping a puppy’s confidence and behavior. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) emphasizes that puppies benefit from positive socialization and enrichment during their critical developmental period, helping them develop into confident, emotionally resilient adult dogs. This reinforces why we place so much emphasis on purposeful puppy raising and temperament evaluations rather than relying on gender stereotypes alone.Ā

This approach is especially important when choosing a male or female Shih Tzu companion because it shifts the focus away from assumptions and toward the qualities that truly influence long-term success.

Looking Beyond Gender

If you’ve read our previous blogs, Should I Get a Playmate for My Shih Tzu? and Is Littermate Syndrome a Real Thing?, you’ve probably noticed a common theme.

Successful multi-dog households aren’t created by chance.

They’re built through intentional decisions.

Choosing the right companion means considering your current dog’s personality, your family’s lifestyle, your available time for training, and your long-term goals—not simply selecting a puppy because they’re male or female.

If you’d like to explore this topic even further, we also invite you to read our earlier article, Should I Get a Boy or Girl Playmate for My Dog?, where we discuss gender considerations from a broader perspective before narrowing the conversation specifically to Shih Tzus.

Together, these resources can help you make a well-informed decision that benefits both your family and your future puppy.

The Divine Pups Difference

At Divine Pups, we believe every successful placement begins with understanding the puppy—not simply choosing the puppy.

Our mission, Mending Hearts. Building Families., guides every recommendation we make. We intentionally raise our puppies through purposeful socialization, confidence-building experiences, and age-appropriate enrichment while carefully observing their developing personalities. This allows us to recommend puppies based on temperament, energy level, confidence, and compatibility with your family rather than relying on outdated assumptions about gender.

Whether you ultimately choose a male or female Shih Tzu companion, our goal remains the same: helping you find the puppy whose personality is the best match for your home.

If you’re considering adding another puppy to your family, we invite you to visit our Ready Pups page to learn more about our available puppies and our thoughtful matching process. We also encourage you to explore our related educational articles, including Should I Get a Playmate for My Shih Tzu?, Is Littermate Syndrome a Real Thing?, and Should I Get a Boy or Girl Playmate for My Dog? Together, these resources will help you make a confident, informed decision.

At the end of the day, the best male or female Shih Tzu companion isn’t determined by gender. It’s the puppy whose temperament, personality, and energy complement your current dog and fit seamlessly into your family’s lifestyle. That’s the foundation for a lifelong friendship—and that’s exactly what we strive to create at Divine Pups.
