Shih Tzu Energy and Behavior: Why Your Dog Reads You Before You Say a Word

Here’s something I think about more than almost anything else in this work. Before you ever ask your Shih Tzu to sit, come, or leave it, you’ve already taught him something. Your body has been talking the whole time. You just weren’t the one who decided what it said.

Understanding Shih Tzu energy and behavior starts with one simple fact: your dog is always feeling the energy you’re projecting. You can’t fake it, and you genuinely can’t turn it off. Training starts long before the first command.

Why There Is No Off Switch for Shih Tzu Energy

I think people hear “energy” and picture something vague, almost mystical. It’s not. Energy is just the state your body is projecting in a given moment, and your dog is reading it constantly, whether you’re actively training or just standing in the kitchen making coffee. There’s no neutral setting. You’re always broadcasting something, and a Shih Tzu, being as tuned in to their people as this breed tends to be, picks it up fast.

How a Shih Tzu Reads You Even When You’re Not Training

That’s the part that trips people up. They think of energy as something they bring out for a training session and put away afterward. But your dog doesn’t clock in and out with you. He’s reading you at the door, on the walk, during dinner, the whole time. Every one of those ordinary moments is teaching him something about what to expect from you, long before any formal lesson begins.

The Formula Behind Your Shih Tzu’s Energy: Intention Times Emotion

Here’s a simple way to think about where that energy actually comes from. Intention times emotion equals energy. What you mean to do, combined with how you actually feel while you’re doing it, produces the signal your Shih Tzu picks up. You can have great intentions (calm walk, confident greeting, patient training session) and still leak a completely different energy if the emotion underneath doesn’t match. Your dog isn’t responding to your plan. He’s responding to the product of the two.

The Five Channels Your Shih Tzu Uses to Read Your Energy

Your Shih Tzu isn’t picking this up through one sense. He’s reading several channels at once, and each one carries its own piece of the message:

  • Breath. Fast, shallow breathing tells him something different than slow, even breathing.
  • Posture. A tense jaw and raised shoulders read differently than a loose, relaxed stance.
  • Tension. Where you’re holding tightness in your body shows up before you’ve said anything at all.
  • Tempo. How quickly you move and speak adds another layer to the message.
  • Scent. Underneath all of it is scent, which carries more information than most of us ever considered.

Each channel adds up, and your Shih Tzu is reading all five at once, not just the one you’re consciously aware of.

A Shih Tzu Energy Reset You Can Use Before Any Interaction

Before any interaction, even something as small as clipping on a leash, there’s a simple reset worth building into habit:

  1. Breathe, once, slowly.
  2. Relax your shoulders.
  3. Visualize what you actually want the next few minutes to look like.

It takes maybe five seconds, and it changes what you’re bringing into the room before you’ve said a single word to your Shih Tzu puppy or grown dog.

How to Project Calm, Confident Energy Around Your Shih Tzu Every Day

The reset above works in the moment, but calm, confident energy is also something you can build as a habit over time. A few ways to practice it outside of a dedicated training session:

  • Slow your movements down slightly when you greet your Shih Tzu, even when you’re excited to see him.
  • Notice where you’re holding tension (jaw, shoulders, hands) during ordinary parts of the day, not just stressful ones.
  • Give yourself a moment before reacting to something your dog does, rather than responding on reflex.
  • Practice the breathe-relax-visualize reset during calm moments too, not only before something challenging, so it becomes automatic.

None of this requires you to feel calm all the time. It just means giving your body a chance to catch up with the state you actually want to project.

The Science Behind How Your Shih Tzu Reads Your Energy

I know this can sound like a feeling more than a fact, so here’s why I don’t think it is. Research on emotion and body chemistry has found that our emotional states change our scent in measurable ways (de Groot & Smeets, 2017). Separately, trained dogs have shown they can reliably distinguish a person’s stressed breath and sweat from that same person’s calm breath and sweat (Wilson et al., 2022). And dogs don’t just read one channel in isolation. Other research has found that dogs fuse what they see and what they hear into a single read of a person, and they notice when those two signals don’t match (Albuquerque et al., 2016). None of this is a stretch. It’s your Shih Tzu’s nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do.

The One Thing to Remember About Your Shih Tzu’s Energy

Dogs don’t follow your words or your commands. They follow your calm and confident energy. Everything else is built on top of that.

Your Shih Tzu Energy Practice for This Week

Before every interaction with your dog for the next 48 hours, take one slow breath, drop your shoulders, and visualize what you actually want from that moment. Then notice what changes on his end, because something usually does.
