Is Your Dog Humping? Here's How to Stop It - Divine Pups

Ā

Hi there, dog lovers!

We all know that puppies are adorable, cuddly and full of energy! However, they also come with their own unique set of quirks and behaviors that may leave us scratching our heads. One of these is humping behavior, which is common in young pups. Although it may seem comical at first, it can quickly become a frustrating and embarrassing habit.

Ā I understand first hand the challenges that come with coping with humping behavior. That’s why in this blog, we’ll explore the many reasons why puppies engage in this behavior, and learn some effective strategies to manage and ultimately resolve it.

So, join me as we navigate the unique world of puppy humping behavior. Together, we’ll learn how to better understand our furry friends, and build a stronger, happier relationship with them

Now, I know it might sound hilarious and harmless, but trust me, you don’t want to encourage this behavior. Not only can it be extremely uncomfortable for you and your visitors, but it can also be frustrating for your pup. Luckily, there’s a solution!

Meet Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behaviors, or DRA for short. It’s a fancy term for a simple concept – replace the negative behavior with a positive one. In this case, we’re going to focus on providing your pup with an alternative behavior that is more desirable than humping.

First and foremost, keep in mind that puppies are full of energy and they crave attention. So, if your pup is humping, it might be a sign that they are bored or seeking attention. Start by providing your dog with plenty of exercise and playtime. This will help to reduce their overall energy level and decrease the likelihood of humping behavior.

Next, identify a positive behavior that you want your pup to do instead of humping. It could be something as simple as sitting, lying down, or fetching a toy. Every time you catch your pup engaging in this positive behavior, reward them with praise, pets, and treats. Consistency is key here, so be sure to provide positive reinforcement every time your pup performs the desired behavior.

Lastly, don’t give up! It may take some time for your pup to break the habit of humping, but with patience, consistency, and the use of DRA, you can help your pup develop healthy and positive behaviors.
