Shih Tzu are known for their adorable expressions and beautiful coats, which can come in a variety of colors. What many Shih Tzu owners may not realize is that these colors can change over time. Understanding the common and uncommon reasons behind these color changes can help owners appreciate the unique beauty of their Shih Tzu even more. This post will explore the common color changes in Shih Tzu, why they happen, and what you can expect as your puppy grows.

Understanding Puppy Colors

When Shih Tzu are born, they typically have a darker coat color which may change as they mature. This initial color is not always an accurate indicator of their adult coat. As puppies, their coats are packed with pigments that might lighten as they age, leading to surprising transformations. This natural progression in color is not linked to specific, testable genes but is rather a part of the breed’s unique characteristics.

External Influences on Color Changes

Beyond genetics, external elements like sun exposure can significantly affect a Shih Tzu’s coat color. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause what is often referred to as ‘sun burning,’ where dark coats develop a reddish tint. Additionally, seasonal variations can lead to subtle shifts in coat color, noticeable when comparing photos from different times of the year. These changes can be more pronounced during summer when sunlight exposure is at its peak.

Variability in Color Changes

Shih Tzu coats are subject to a wide range of color changes. Colors can lighten—sometimes dramatically so, with even dark black markings fading completely. While less common, coats can also darken. Changes can be sporadic, with small patches of hair transforming into more significant areas over time. In multicolored coats, one color may fade entirely. Notably, the brindle pattern—a stripe-like pattern—often becomes less distinct as the dog matures. These transformations are all within the natural variability of the breed, except for colors that are genetically impossible based on the dog’s lineage. For instance, a purebred Shih Tzu cannot develop merle patterns as these are not characteristics found within the breed’s genetic makeup.

Color Changes and Health Implications

While color changes are a natural aspect of a Shih Tzu’s development, drastic or sudden changes should be monitored. Although most color changes are harmless and are primarily based on genetics, an abrupt alteration in coat color might sometimes indicate health issues. For example,  a sudden darkening could maybe be a sign of hyperpigmentation, which can occur due to underlying skin issues. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian can ensure that color changes are just part of your pet’s natural aging process and not a sign of health problems.

The AKC and Shih Tzu Colors

The American Kennel Club (AKC) really cares about all the different colors Shih Tzu can be. They make a list of all the colors these dogs can have, from the common ones like black and white to rarer ones like blue. This list helps make sure that people who breed Shih Tzus keep the dogs looking diverse and true to their breed.

Why does this matter? It helps everyone know what a Shih Tzu can look like and ensures that these dogs are shown and bred responsibly. It’s also a way to celebrate how special and varied these dogs are. By sticking to this list, breeders help keep all the different beautiful colors of Shih Tzu around for everyone to enjoy.

The Takeaway

Shih Tzu are truly special, not just for their playful and loving nature, but also for their colorful coats that change over time. These changes can be due to a lot of things, like how much sunlight they get or just as part of growing up. Understanding these changes helps us appreciate the unique beauty of each Shih Tzu even more. The American Kennel Club recognizes this too, keeping a detailed list of all the possible colors to help make sure Shih Tzu stay as diverse and true to their breed as possible. So, as you watch your Shih Tzu grow, remember that each color change is part of what makes them uniquely beautiful. Celebrate every shade, and keep regular vet visits to make sure these changes are just natural parts of their growth.
