Unlike the more common black pigment seen in many dogs, liver-colored Shih Tzu have a brown pigment. What sets the Liver Chocolate Shih Tzu apart is not just this brown pigment but also the deep, rich chocolate hue of their coat.
The liver color can affect all the usual black-pigmented areas of a Shih Tzu. This means their noses, paw pads, and eye rims will also be brown instead of black, which is typical of the liver trait. Their eyes are usually lighter too, often a warm amber or hazel.A true liver pup has matching brown pigment in all these areas, not just a brown coat, this is caused by eumelanin, produced by their cells.
