If you’ve ever cuddled a Shih Tzu puppy, you already know they’re tiny bundles of cuteness with big personalities. But how long do they stay that small? And when do they officially stop growing?

If you’re raising a Divine Pup (or planning to!), here’s what you need to know about a Shih Tzu’s growth timeline.

The Typical Growth Timeline for Shih Tzus

Most Shih Tzus do the bulk of their growing in the first 6 to 8 months of life. You’ll notice the biggest size changes happening between birth and about 6 months old, with some pups continuing to slowly fill out and mature until they’re about 12 months.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), adult Shih Tzus typically weigh between 9 and 16 pounds and stand about 8 to 11 inches tall at the shoulder once fully grown.

While their physical size levels out around a year old, it’s common for Shih Tzus to continue “maturing” mentally and emotionally up until they’re closer to 18 to 24 months old. So don’t be surprised if your pup’s energy levels and confidence still shift even after they reach their full height!

Factors That Can Affect Growth

Not every Shih Tzu follows an identical growth curve. Several factors can influence how big a puppy gets and how fast they reach maturity:

  • Genetics: Size is often influenced by the parents’ size and lineage.
  • Nutrition: Puppies who receive proper, high-quality nutrition grow steadily and more predictably.
  • Overall Health: Health conditions can occasionally affect growth rates, which is why regular vet care is so important in puppyhood.
  • Spaying/Neutering Timing: Early spaying or neutering may have slight effects on physical development, although this varies.

How to Tell if Your Shih Tzu Has Stopped Growing

If your Shih Tzu is around 12 months old and their weight and height have stayed about the same for a couple of months, you can safely assume they’ve reached their full size.

Their energy might start to settle slightly as well. Puppies who once had endless zoomies may now enjoy longer naps and quieter cuddles. While Shih Tzus always keep a playful spirit, adulthood brings a slightly calmer, more even-tempered version of the puppy you know and love.

A Word on “Imperial” or “Teacup” Shih Tzus

You might have heard the terms “Imperial” or “Teacup” Shih Tzu before. These are marketing terms some breeders use for smaller-than-standard Shih Tzus. However, according to the AKC, there’s only one recognized Shih Tzu size.

Shih Tzus that mature under 9 pounds can still make wonderful companions, but it’s important to know that intentional breeding for tiny size can sometimes come with increased health risks.

In Conclusion

Most Shih Tzus will stop growing in height by about 9 to 12 months old, although they’ll continue filling out and maturing emotionally into their second year. Their small-but-mighty size, combined with their big hearts and charming personalities, is exactly what makes them such treasured companions.
